Beginner Photography Mistakes to Avoid – Khartes School Guide
Starting your photography journey is exciting, but most beginners make the same mistakes that slow their progress. As founder of Khartes Photography School (ISO-certified) and Nikon India Mentor with 12+ years experience, I’ve seen these errors in hundreds of students – and helped them fix them fast.
Here are the top beginner photography mistakes to avoid – plus how our courses at Khartes School teach you the right way from day one.
1. Shooting Only in Auto Mode
Biggest mistake: Never leaving Auto mode.
- Camera decides everything – you learn nothing
- Results inconsistent in different lighting
Fix: Switch to Manual or Aperture Priority. Learn how shutter speed, aperture, ISO work together. In our Basic Digital Course, we teach manual mode hands-on in week 1!

2. Ignoring Composition Rules
Photos feel “off” but you don’t know why.
- Subject in center always
- Distracting background
- Crooked horizons
Fix: Learn Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines, Framing. Practice daily. Our courses include composition assignments with feedback.
3. Poor Lighting Understanding
Flat, harsh, or dark photos.
- Shooting in direct midday sun
- No fill light for shadows
- Wrong white balance
Fix: Golden hour magic, reflectors, off-camera flash basics. Our Lighting Mastery course is dedicated to this!

4. Not Shooting in RAW
JPEG looks good initially but limits editing.
- Colors blown out
- No recovery of shadows/highlights
Fix: Always shoot RAW + JPEG. Learn post-processing. We teach Lightroom/Photoshop in every course.
5. Over-Editing or No Editing
Either photos look fake (too much saturation) or dull (no editing). Fix: Subtle adjustments – skin tones natural, colors true to life.
6. Not Backing Up Photos
Lost all photos when card/hard drive failed – heartbreaking! Fix: 3-2-1 backup rule. We teach workflow including backups.
7. Buying Wrong Gear First
Spending on expensive lenses before mastering basics. Fix: Start with kit lens, learn technique first.
